Institute of Clinical Research (ICR) Conference, Brighton, March 2011

John Illingworth, Managing Director,, attended the recent Institute of Clinical Research Conference in Brighton which was as usual, a lively affair. Some 200 delegates were present, alongside many exhibitors. Speakers included, Professor Christopher McCabe, Head of Health Economics University of Leeds, Dr. Janet Wisely, Director, National Research Ethics Service, Professor Richard Lilford, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology University of Birmingham and Dr. Richard Dixon, Futurologist and Author.

Four conference streams were run over the 2-day conference; Embracing the Future, Sharing Knowledge, Raising Standards, and Developing Professionals.

Dr. Patrick Dixon, the opening speaker, addressed a number of important ethical issues within clinical research today. Dr. Dixon has been described in the media as Europe’s leading futurist and has been ranked amongst the top 20 most influential business thinkers alive today. He addressed such issues as our ageing population and the changes in our healthcare requirements, as well as the issues surrounding stem cell research in extending life expectancy.
